Mattress nets: which ones to choose and why

If you are looking for information on mattress nets, which ones to choose and the different types offered on the market, you have most likely come to the conclusion that your old net no longer offers the right performance. Perhaps it has become too flexible, sagging or, conversely, perhaps it is too stiff and does not give you the comfort you desire. Or, you have just discovered that your spine needs more adequate support and you are looking for a mattress base that can take care of it.

Whatever your reason for looking for a new bed base, know that there are several factors to consider when choosing a bed base for your mattress, from materials to height to the position you sleep in and your build.

So here's everything you need to know about mattress nets, which ones to choose, why, and how to ensure you get quality sleep in case you can't or don't want to change them.

Mattress nets: which ones to choose?

Whereas in the past they served only to hold rudimentary mattresses made from grass or straw, today mattress nets work synergistically with the mattress, to the point that they are now referred to as a "bed system."

In relation to materials, there are essentially three types of mattress nets: wooden nets, metal nets, and hybrid nets, which have some elements made of wood and others made of metal.

If we look instead at the type, then mattress nets are divided into spring and slatted nets.

  • Spring mattress nets-now almost entirely fallen into disuse, spring mattress nets feature a metal perimeter frame, to which is attached a real iron mesh, which in many cases is reinforced at specific points in order to support the weight of the body. Inexpensive and durable, they are still popular today as mattress nets for children. On the flip side, however, you should be aware that these nets tend to give way over time and, in most cases, sooner or later begin to "squeak," producing an annoying noise with each change of position.
  • Slatted mattress frames - this type of mattress frames, is definitely the most widely used and appreciated. The perimeter structure is often made of steel, but sometimes it can also be made of the same wood as the slats, installed horizontally, in order to ensure optimal support. But how to choose a mattress base when faced with a vast and varied offer? Observe the number of slats: if they are wide and few in number, the bed base will offer more support, on the contrary, when these are thin and numerous, the bed base will tend to flex more.

Indicated especially for those suffering from back problems, slatted mattress nets also have another advantage: in some cases, in fact, these nets are equipped with an electric mechanism, which allows them to lower and raise at will, both on the head and leg sides.

Mattress frames: which ones to choose according to height

But beyond materials, if you're considering the different types of mattress nets, which ones to choose, and ultimately which mattress support to trust with the quality of your sleep, then know that you'll also need to consider its height.

Let's start by saying that the ideal height of a mattress base should be between 35 and 45 cm. This is because in choosing the bed base, you will also have to take into account that of the mattress base, which is usually between 20 and 30 cm. Considering both elements, therefore, you will have a bed system that will measure between 60 and 70 cm

Of course, these measurements can be adjusted according to your very personal needs. In fact, the comfort of the mattress base also depends on other factors. For example, if you suffer from dust mite allergies, you may find it more convenient to rely on a higher mattress base that allows you to maintain the right distance between you and the floor. Conversely, if you are pregnant or suffer from joint problems, a lower bed will allow you to sit and stand up with less difficulty.

But if you're on the fence about which mattress pads to choose, know that you'll also need to take into consideration the position in which you sleep.

Mattress frames: which ones to choose based on how you sleep

The choice of mattress base greatly affects comfort and well-being. Those who sleep on their backs, in fact, need different support than those who sleep on their sides. In the former case, adjustable slatted bed frames will be perfect, which, by allowing adjustment of the inclination of the top of the mattress, provide the spine with adequate support.

In contrast, sleeping on your side you will need a more flexible bed base, which will relieve pressure on contact points, such as hips and shoulders, and take care of your spine, adapting to the curves of your body.

If, on the other hand, you love to sleep supine, then you will need to choose a stiffer mattress base that prevents the pelvis from sinking, causing the lumbar vertebral discs to be crushed.

Body size, then, is another factor to consider. It is clear, in fact, that individuals with heavier builds will need a mattress base that can bear their weight without deforming, while lighter ones, such as children, will be able to rest comfortably even on a less rigid base.

Mattress nets: what to do when you can't change them?

Have you just discovered that you can't rest well, but at the same time you can't or don't want to change the mattress base? Don't worry, there is a solution for you too: the orthopedic mattress. Designed to provide adequate support and promote proper alignment of the spine, orthopedic mattresses are supports made of high-quality materials designed to conform to the shape of the body and effectively combat back, neck and shoulder pain.

Alternatively, you might also consider trusting your sleep to a mattress topper, which will correct any critical issues with the bed base and your old mattress, providing the proper support for your well-being.
